What is better a short ram? or a CAI (cold air intake)? I have a 2001 honda civic LX Automatic. Someone told me that i couldn't add a CAI because i have an automatic and therefore it wouldn't fit and he said that i would be stuck with the short ram. Doesn't the short ram go in the same place as the CAI? lol i thought that was funny. But what is better? I hear that the SRI gives the engine hotter air than the CAI but it makes you accelerate a little better(the SRI does). I was looking at Andys Auto sports i think thats the name and i was looking at the Kamakazi CAI's and the AEM SRI's. The kamakazi was cheaper than the AEM's SRI. Which one should i go with? The more expensive SRI or the $10 cheaper CAI? If i got a CAI could i get a thicker air filter if it fit?
THANKS!
note: The CAI's air filter was kind of small. The SRI's filter was big as hell.|||Get a cold air intake. Be carefull though. I had one in my car and I hydrolocked it because of the cold air intake. Make sure theres no easy way for water to get sucked in by the intake. I ran over a puddle and splashed the water up into my intake and hydrolocked my motor. I gave the motor to my brother who fixed it by taking apart the bottom half of the motor but I had to buy a new one.|||You want the air entering your engine as cold as possible. Colder air is denser and therefore contains more oxygen so you get more power.
Also you need to maximise the amount of air entering your engine so the need the filter with the least restriction.
Without knowing where you are it's hard to say but in some areas you may not need a filter at all. Where I live the air is pretty clean and very little dust so I made my filters by modifying tea strainers. I've even seen a pair of ladies tights recycled to do the job. Super cheap and a finer filter than my tea strainers. Just choose the denier to suit your location.
I have old fashioned two barrel carburettors on my car (Alfa Romeo) but something similar may be possible.
Bear in mind that if the increase the airflow you may end up with a weak mixture so you may have to adjust this.
Ian M|||they both go in the same spot it just that CAI is a little longer, the SRI does take in hotter air just because it takes in air from the engine compartment and the CAI takes air in form under the engine compartment. the CAI will produce more power but with the SRI the power will increase in power will come at lower RPM's where the CAI will come higher in RPM's. i would just get which ever one fits your driving style the best|||Also instead of running to AEM save some cash... All piping is almost Identical. I've always been a true AEM customer until I decided to save some cash. I bought a CAI off ebay, its a 1 piece design like most AEM and also came with mounting K%26amp;N filter. After all just cost me 60 bucks, a lot better then the AEM price, and it came powdercoated red to match the car. But yeah, just like the last guy, it depends on where you want the extra gain. I perfer the higher RPMs so I went with the CAI... plus you can't beat the loud whistle a CAI gives.
