Why did we name football soccer?

It does not make any sense at all to name a sport after the word association. Why did we name football soccer?
They named it football because you play with your foot and it is a ball
Everyone else in the world calls it football - except the US and Australia, though Australia has officially changed. Why did the US call it soccer - I have no idea. Football it is - no need for any other word. Why did we name football soccer?
we are dumb americans...

and we already had football.

so we couldn't have futbol, as well.
It's kind of a long story. If you're really interested check this link:

because we already have a much better sport called football. we didn't want to confuse a sissy sport like soccer with real football
Apparently, in the US, the "american football" sport was so named because the main highlight that crowned a touchdown score was the kicking (with the foot) of the ball through the H-goalposts... hence it acquired the name football. At this time the 'real' football sport was not popular in the US, and by the time it became a mainstream sport in US it's name unfortunately was already taken by the impostor... hence it had to settle for the name soccer in the US --- and everyone else is as bemused as you are on how that term was coined.
"We" didn't... the English did.
