Football is what those johnny foreigners across the Channel call 'Association Football' because they are ignorant and don't play other football games.
Rugby Union Football (Union) and Rugby League Football (Rugby League) were differentiated from Association Football (shortened to Soccer) by being named as in the brackets.
My Godfather (Harry Sharratt) played Soccer for England in the 1956 Olympic Games, he didn't go and play football. In fact he turned down a teaching post at Leeds Grammar School because they only played Football, not Soccer.
Now dum dums we know the Education has gone down the drain and you need 3 'A' levels to not be able to parse a sentence, but why do you insist on calling Soccer by the name used inaccurately by overseas people who don't know better.
Thank God for the U.S. of A. where in between turning up late for wars and then strafing their allies at least they use the correct term for kicking an imitation pigs bladder around.
Serious answers only for this most serious of questions. Why does the youth of today insist on calling 'Soccer' Football?
It all started in 1863 in England, when two football association (association football and rugby football) split off on their different course. Therefore, the first Football Association was founded in England. (known as the FA then and today) Hence its called football and always has been.
PS EDIT your Godfather represented great britain. He was an amatuer goal keeper who worked as a school teacher. My grandad was born in 1927 and died in the same year as your Godfather. He ref'ed football and coached galic teams so I dont think it was called soccer in that time either.
The F.A (the FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION) *nudge nudge, wink wink* was founded in 26 October 1863 and is the oldest national football association. Therefore the first ever official association of "football" and called the game "football".
The term soccer originated in England, first appearing in the 1880s as an Oxford "-er" abbreviation of the word "association".
So soccer wasn't used instead of the word football but instead of the word association.
England created the game and called it football, all of europe followed this example but U.S.A did not.
Yes at first Rugby was known as rugby football but had nothing to do with the F.A and created RFU ( the rugby football association) in 1871
So soccer is not the official name of the game and youth are not the only ones calling it by its real name of football.
Sky sports and BBC always call it football and i am watching football first as i speak on skysports1.
Have you realised this was posted in the english football section? Why does the youth of today insist on calling 'Soccer' Football?
Oh Irony.
That will be lost on 'Soccer' fans
They will take the question seriously. But I have wondered that, it was always Soccer when I was a kid but seemed to lose favour when we started playing foreign teams.
So foreign name.
Imitation pigs bladder will upset most footie supporters.
No sense of humour, or brains.
Because you ignorant americans insist of calling it another name because you've used the name 'football' for another sport that is only played in your country, which is effectively a puffs version of rugby (you feel the need to wear armour)Why does the youth of today insist on calling 'Soccer' Football?
Where I come from UK It has ALWAYS been football or rugby
One sees soccer occasionally in books or to a lesser extent in media but always spoken as football
Not just youth of today . I for example was probably born before your godfather who like me (%26amp; everyone else)generally refered to it as a game of football
Serious answer ?
You're obviously not a fan of football !
Nobody from these shores ( or a good many others ) call it anything other than that .
Soccer is what the Americans call it .
I like tat it is called different things in different places. More then one person can be right.
How about everyone has to call it whatever the World Cup winner calls it.Then England fans will never have to worry about it again.

A spell of national service would do them good! Especially now I'm too old to have to do it myself...
