Why do so many people refer to the German national team as 'over-achievers'?

They are a very large and developed nation, with a rich history of association football. Surely the term 'over-achievers' should be reserved for the likes of the lowly populated Uruguay (World Cup Winners, 1930 and 1950) and Denmark (European Champions 1992, and have never failed at the group stage of the World Cup). Why do so many people refer to the German national team as 'over-achievers'?
Probably because they think the team is trying to hard isn't that what over achieving is? I honestly could care less....
They always do well. Germany is probably going to win at South Africa too.

Go GERMANY!Why do so many people refer to the German national team as 'over-achievers'?
They are over achievers because robots that play without style or passion shouldn't ever be winners but the Germans always contradict these virtues and end up making it to the later stages of the world cup.

Germany reminds me of the computer that defeated chess champion Gary Kasparov - technically perfect but souless - I hope they get destroyed in South Africa...
the ' so many people' you refer to are largely english. and there is a lot of sour grapes there. germany has won much more than england and the english simply dont like it . lets be honest about it. then you have 'the war' etc, and that adds to the hatred and jealousy also.many english like to lecture other countries about intolerance and bigotry when they themselves are guilty of a lot of it as well. one has just to listen to jeff stelling on sky every saturday, where you have match reports by various ex-football stars. when someone scores who have a 'foreign name' they laugh at it . it simply shows there ignorance and racisim. Why do so many people refer to the German national team as 'over-achievers'?
Because under achievement is par for everyone else s course.

German engineering is some of the best in the world.

Ok, so the football isnt exactly "the beautiful game" but they play to their strengths and are well

organised and work hard. Something many many people could take lessons from, including

myself !
They practice beforehand, dammit! That's not fair.
