Why do people make fun of the way Americans call football soccer...?

And most of them are completely ignorant of the history of the sport. Football has nothing to do with passing the ball with your feet, it just means you aren't riding a horse while playing, hence, you are playing on FOOT. The word "soccer" actually comes from England, where the modern version of the game originated. In England, there were two types of football: rugby football and association football. The slang term for rugby football was "rugger," and the slang for association football was "assoc." The word "assoc" gradually evolved into "soccer," which was much easier to say. When association football was introduced to North America, gridiron football (the type played by the NFL and in the Super Bowl) was already well established. To avoid confusion, Americans adopted the British nickname "soccer" for the new sport. Canadians, Australians, and New Zealanders also call it soccer. Why do people make fun of the way Americans call football soccer...?
In 2005 the Australians changed their name from the Australian soccer Association to the Football Federation Australia. Association FOOTBALL is the correct name of the sport, soccer is not the correct name of the sport. FIFA is the world governing body of the sport FISA is not. Maybe we should call the NFL the NGL (National Gridiron League).
These people are just complete idiots. They're not worth worrying about. Everybody has there way of calling association football. Its probably just because many countries have taken the root nickname football and turn it into their language. But again if these people had any sign of intelligence they should just stop making fun of Americans. Call it whatever you want, and if anybody mocks you for calling it then they obviously have nothing better to do with their lives. Why do people make fun of the way Americans call football soccer...?
England National Team captain Charles Wreford-Brown is widely credited with coining the term "soccer" and popularizing it

In Ireland the word "soccer" is also extensively used (not exclusively) to differentiate it from the more popular sport in Ireland, Gaelic Football

To whoever mentioned FIFA - FIFA stands for the French term "Fédération Internationale de Football Association" which translates to "International Federation of Association Football" in English so FIFA uses the formal name of the sport and both soccer and football are nicknames
For the record; I am English (or as someone else on here puts it: a "sissy nanny brit") and I really, truly couldnt care less what people call the game. The way I see it is this; Call it what you like, whether that is "football" or "soccer" and stop worrying about what anyone else thinks. I dont know about you hun but my life already has enough worries without me having to be concerned with other peoples thoughts :) xx.Why do people make fun of the way Americans call football soccer...?
That's a great point. English are the ones who came up with the nickname yet somehow they are always the ones to yap about it. Damn those sissy nanny brits.
I ask myself the same thing. Do they expect every culture and or language to call it the same thing? Italians call it Calcio, why don't people critize them?
i tend to ignore people like that. it's not that hard to understand that people have different words for the same thing.
Because americans are the best and everyone feels jealous
the italians also call it il futbol
i didn't know this :/ i guess i'll stop mocking them lol
