Some players have died on the pitch, but from the ones i know of it was down to health reasons or unexplained death.
Marc Vivian Foe died on the pitch playing for his country, there was a swiss player that died in similar circumstances aswell (at least i think he was swiss anyway).
Techically not on the pitch, but a whole team (amateur) were kidnapped in Colombia by drug barons and executed. Also after a poor display by the Colombian National team in a World Cup, after the players returned home in Colombia, some players were assassinated. So if playing football in Colombia, it can be very dangerous.
Rugby is probably the most dangerous major sport though, i've heard lots of storiesof players that have broken their necks in scrums. Even happens at youth level.
Apparently it's happened quite alot and people have paralyzed from playing Rugby and injuries are common.
Yeah, football can be dangerous and people have been killed. Some had heart problems, and i think a guy from cameroun swallowed his tongue a few years back, some people have also had serious injuries from collisons and crazy tackles, some of which turned out to be fatal, which is why they give straight reds for bad tackles as well as suspensions, to discourage people from making reckless tackles.Has anyone been killed in soccer?
alot of them have been off-the-pitch deaths from injuries sustained either during a match or at practice, but 71 players have died from soccer-related incidents/injuries since 1889, not including Antonio Puerta's murder after his 1994 World Cup own goal, or the Iraqi player who was shot dead on the pitch as he was about to score an equalizing goal. Since the wikipedia list doesn't include those two deaths on the list, then I'm sure there have been more than 73 footballing deaths in its history. It's a rough sport, even if some of us italians are drama queens when we get challenged for the ball :D GO ITALY!!!!

Yes... one time i had a concussion, causing me to forget the past month of my life... (according to family).... and another time I had had a long gash down my left leg where I had 30 stitches... and a had someone's cleat step on my arm and my bone came out of my skin... then again I play for an intense premier league
