Why do Americans call football "soccer"?

Yes, I know they have their own game. But that hardly even involves their feet! As far as I know, the rest of the world calls it football- so why do the Americans have to be different?

Oh, and I know that the word soccer originated in Britain as slang for "association football", but we didn't really call it that much. But why did the Americans keep that word?Why do Americans call football "soccer"?

I think americans are lame, they should've called their sport "american football" soccer. It would make so much more sense....



NSL (national soccer league) instead of NFL (national football league) clearly americans wanted a "cooler" sounding name so they called their sport football.

As someone above me mentioned, Ireland and Australia call it soccer, as do Japan, Jamaica, Trinidad, etc. Maybe you should ask South Africans why they have a stadium called "Soccer City."

So you don't know much, as far as I know.



Oh and by the way, rugby players have tried American football, they're called punters and kickers!
So it doesn't get confused with American football



In Ireland we call it soccer so it doesn't get mixed with Gealic football



In Australia they call it soccer so it doesn't get mixed up with Aussie rules

Because the NFL and american football are the most popular here. Calling football soccer is easier and less confusing.
I think the better question to ask would be why do they call American Football American Football, because as you said they don't really use their feet?
american football sucks, they stop play every 10 seconds. anyone can throw a ball forward to another play, its stupid. rugby is much better.

I don't know anything except that football (the American version) is the best sport ever, and soccer is for people who cant play football
